- The architect may be great at design, but are they able to design to budget? The tighter your budget, the more you should worry about this.
- A one-of-a-kind home has more risk for the Builder. They will build a premium into the price to protect themselves from cost over-runs. The more complicated and specialized the design, the larger this premium.
The benefit to using an architect is that you will truly get a one-of-a-kind home. It will be designed the way you want. Take the time to interview an architect who will make your vision a reality. - Some people choose an architect because of previous designs they have seen or because the architect is known for a certain design style.
- Get references from previous clients. You may love the style but, you still have to beware about how the architect works.
- Find out the history of the architect's relationship with their clients: Is it someone that will listen to you and work with you, or are you going to use their own style?
- Are they able to build to budget? Talk to Builders who have built their designs. Find out if they came in on budget and if there is a history of design flaws.
- Ask other owners if there are design flaws that have caused maintenance problems.
